Kuvataiteilija Pekka Vesterinen (s. 1958) asuu ja työskentelee Helsingissä. Hänen pitkä taiteilijauransa alkoi 1980-luvulla, jolloin Vesterinen valmistui Suomen taideakatemian koulusta.
Valon maalari
Valo ja valon liike erilaisissa tiloissa ja ympäristöissä ovat Vesterisen tuotannon keskeisiä teemoja. Maalaukset ovat usein yleisilmeeltään ei-esittäviä, joskin teoksista voi löytää tunnistettavia muotoja tai viitteitä luonnosta tai erilaisista ympäristöjen yksityiskohdista. Vesterisen teosten äärelle pysähtyessä, silmät ja mieli alkavat löytää pinnan alta syvyyttä, tiloja ja erilaisia värisävyjä – ehkäpä illuusioita. Lukuisat päällekkäiset maalikerrokset luovat mielikuvan valon ja varjojen leikistä maalauksen pinnalla ja sisällä.
Maalaus joesta
Newtown Creek 4 -öljymaalaus vuodelta 2015 sijoittuu Vesterisen tuotannossa aikaan, jolloin hän asui ja työskenteli Yhdysvalloissa. Taiteilija poimi teoksiinsa vaikutteita ja yksityiskohtia kaupunkiympäristöstä. Maalaus kuuluu keräilijä Arto Jurttilan kokoelmaan, jonka Porin taidemuseo otti vastaan lahjoituksena vuonna 2026. Teos on sijoitettu Luotsinmäen keskuspuhdistamon asiakastiloihin.
Newtown Creek on East Riveriin yhdistyvä sivujoki New Yorkissa. Samalla se on osa laajempaa ekosysteemiä, Hudsonjoen suistoaluetta. Alueen teollistumisen myötä jokivesi on hyvin saastunutta sisältäen mm. öljyä ja viemärijätettä. Yhteisöpohjainen järjestö Newtown Creek Alliance on vuodesta 2002 lähtien toiminut joen ja sitä ympäröivän alueen kunnostamisen ja elvyttämisen puolesta. Visual Artist Pekka Vesterinen (b. 1958) lives and works in Helsinki. His long artistic career began in the 1980s, when he graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.
Painter of Light
Light and the movement of light in different spaces and environments are central themes in Vesterinen’s work. His paintings are often abstract in their overall appearance, although recognizable forms or references to nature and environmental details can frequently be found within them. When pausing in front of Vesterinen’s works, the eye and mind begin to discover depth, spaces, and subtle variations of color beneath the surface, perhaps even illusions. Numerous overlapping layers of paint create an impression of the interplay of light and shadow.
Painting of a River
The oil painting Newtown Creek 4 (2015) belongs to a period in Vesterinen’s career when he was living and working in the United States. During this time, the artist drew inspiration and details from the urban environment for his works. The painting is part of the collection of art collector Arto Jurttila, which was donated to the Pori Art Museum in 2026. The work has been placed in the customer facilities of the Luotsinmäki Central Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Newtown Creek is a tributary of the East River in New York City. It is also part of the larger ecosystem of the Hudson River estuary. As a result of extensive industrialization in the area, the creek has become heavily polluted, containing oil, sewage waste, and other contaminants. Since 2002, the community-based organization Newtown Creek Alliance has been working to restore and revitalize the creek and its surrounding environment.
