LUONNONTUNTEMUS
PRESS RELEASE (in Finnish)
Nature has been present in visual expression in one form or another since prehistoric times. At times, this presence has been clear and unambiguous, as during the dominance of representational art ideals, but more often, it has been concealed and multifaceted. For example, it is well known that in classical art, nature frequently appears in the form of characters from Greek mythology. In contemporary art, nature is expressed through an extraordinary variety of parallel and overlapping modes of representation. The goal of the Luonnontuntemus (Natural Awareness) exhibition is to showcase this diversity. The exhibition features works by the following artists from the Pori Art Museum’s collection:
Martti Aiha, Lauri Anttila, Jan-Erik Andersson, Per Barclay (Norway), José Bedia (Cuba), Harry Callahan (USA), Flavio Garciandia (Cuba), Sigurður Guðmundsson (Iceland), Timo Heino, Geoffrey Hendricks (USA), Marianne Heske (Norway), Andrei Jahnin (Russia), Ulla Jokisalo, Jussi Kivi, Kaisu Koivisto, Markus Konttinen, Leonhard Lapin (Estonia), Maija Lavonen, Henrietta Lehtonen, Sarmite Malina (Latvia), Arno Rafael Minkkinen (USA), Mox Mäkelä, Esko Männikkö, Jussi Niva, Aulikki Nukala, Jüri Okas (Estonia), Yoko Ono (USA), Dennis Oppenheim (USA), Marta Maria Pérez (Cuba), Teemu Saukkonen, Veijo Setälä, Jyrki Siukonen, George Steinmann (Switzerland), Pasi Tammi and Timo Vartiainen.
The essay Luonnontuntemuksen tiet (Paths of Natural Awareness) in the exhibition publication is written by Docent Yrjö Haila, a researcher at the Satakunta Environmental Research Center under the Finnish Academy of Sciences.
The exhibition has been organized to celebrate the European Nature Conservation Year 1995 and as part of the series of events for Finland’s National Green Year Celebration, held in Pori from June 8 to 10, 1995.
The series includes a Ministerial Meeting open to the public, held at the Pori Art Museum on June 8, 1995, at 2:00 PM. In this meeting, both the current Minister of the Environment and their predecessor will reflect on their respective terms. Following the Ministerial Meeting, a dining event titled Carrot Opera, created by Jan-Erik Andersson, Kari Juutilainen, and Pertti Toikkanen, will begin at 4:00 PM.
