Caroline Ward-Raatikainen

I am an English artist, and I studied painting both in London and Helsinki at the art Academies. Since school days I have taken watercolours out to describe the landscapes around me, and since moving to Finland all my paintings have their beginnings in my local forest landscapes. From my perspective, and in the context of the climate crisis, these common forest and plants are special.
When the weather allows, I paint en plein air, and when that’s not possible I carry the forest’s vegetation back to my studio. I often return to the same places, mapping the cyclical themes in nature; from spring’s beginning through to winter’s end, and back again.
On this course we will look at ways of painting both forest landscape and still-lifes of the forest plants. I will share with you some of the watercolour techniques I have developed over time, while also helping you to develop your own personal style of working.
