Volcano
An Exhibition on Water, Fire, and Other Basic Needs
August 4 – September 1, 1996
At the Pori Water Tower

The Pori Water Tower opens to the public for the month of August with the Volcano exhibition. Recently celebrating its 60th anniversary, the water tower, designed by Bertel Strömmer, is a landmark in itself due to its location and architecture. Organized in collaboration between the Pori Art Museum and the artist group NYTE, the Volcano exhibition features projects inside the water tower and in its surrounding area—installations, photographs, sculptures, video works, and a sound piece.

The artists featured in the exhibition are:

  • PETER FISCHLI & DAVID WEISS (Switzerland)
  • FELIX GONZALEZ-TORRES (USA)
  • KALLE HAMM (Lahti)
  • KAISU KOIVISTO (Pori)
  • HENRIETTA LEHTONEN (Tampere)
  • OLLI-PEKKA MERIMAA & KAISU PAAVILAINEN (Virrat)
  • ROMAN SIGNER (Switzerland)
  • YVES TRÉMORIN (France)

In connection with the exhibition’s theme, the NASA Volcanology Research Team (NASA EOS IDS Volcanology Team) is also involved, providing reports on the global volcanic situation.

The Pori Water Tower is open during the exhibition from Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00-18:00, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Entrance fee: 20/10 mk. The observation deck of the tower is accessible if weather permits.
