The Pori Art Museum and NYTE association organize a national photography exhibition, Broken Heart Hotel, at the old Hotel Otava in Pori from 5th August to 7th September 1997. The exhibition consists of photographs, videos, poems, paintings, and installations by artists invited by the Pori Art Museum, including Brian Baderman, Timo Heino, Markku Into, Olli Jaatinen, Päivi Jokinen, Eija Keskinen, Jouni Kujansuu, Jouko Lehtola, Ly Lestberg, Päivi Setälä, Georgina Starr, and Jim Wichman.
A significant part of the exhibition is formed by the best works from a photography competition organized by the NYTE association. The competition was open to all, and from the submitted images, the competition jury – photographer Jouko Lehtola from Helsinki, along with artists Kaisu Koivisto and Päivi Setälä from Pori – selected the works to be displayed in the exhibition.
As a separate part of the exhibition, the history of Hotel Otava is presented through a photographic chronicle, shedding light on its long and rich past, from theater performances and banquet dinners to the last waltz danced in the restaurant in 1985. Hotel Otava was built in the 1850s after the great fire of Pori and became famous in cultural history for hosting the first performance of the Finnish Theatre in its large salon in 1872. Throughout its long history, many cultural events have been held at the hotel, and the Pori Jazz 66 association was founded in Otava’s piano cabinet. Many also remember the legendary Otava jams and popular dance nights.
Architecturally interesting details can be found in the building, including the design by J.E. Stenberg and the fossil remnants visible in the stairway stones. Broken Heart Hotel continues the collaboration between the Pori Art Museum and NYTE, which has brought previous summer exhibitions, such as the 1996 Volcano exhibition at the old water tower in Pori.
Broken Heart Hotel is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 – 18:00.

The exhibition and competition have been supported by the Cultural Board of the City of Pori, the Arts Committee of Turku and Pori Province, the State Art Committee, and the State Photography Committee.
The team includes Jari-Pekka Vanhala, exhibition secretary from the Pori Art Museum, and artists Anna Hall, Kaisu Koivisto, Sinikka Santikko, and Päivi Setälä from the NYTE association.
