The For the Sake of Color exhibition explores various forms of expression in painting, ranging from pure and minimalist color fields to works emphasizing the surface texture and materiality of paint. Most of the works in the exhibition date back to the 1980s. The pieces have been selected from the collections of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation, the City of Pori, and other archives held by the Pori Art Museum.
The exhibition features works by Finnish artists Sakari Alanen, Tor Arne, Carolus Enckell, Lauri Laine, Leena Luostarinen, Marika Mäkelä, Paul Osipow, Jaakko Pakkala, Silja Rantanen, and Hannu Väisänen. Earlier trends in Finnish color art are represented by pieces from Ellen Thesleff and Sigrid Schauman.
The exhibition also includes paintings by Norwegian artist Olav Christopher Jenssen, Swedish artist Jarl Ingvarsson, and American artist Harvey Quatman.
Additionally, Kain Tapper’s moonlight-themed sculptures—characterized by their delicately treated, patinated surfaces—serve as an example of sculptural expression emphasizing painterly richness and intricate surface structure.
