ERLING NEBY’S COLLECTION
Exhibition at the Pori Art Museum, February 2 – March 2, 1997
Press conference on Friday, January 31 at 12:00. Welcome!
Erling Neby will be present at the event.

The collection of Norwegian collector Erling Neby has developed into a distinct, coherent entity over the past few decades. Neby has gathered works that he feels a personal connection to, all of which share a heritage in constructivist art. Geometric abstraction, constructivism, and newer abstract art movements from the 1980s are all represented in the collection, which includes European, American, and Scandinavian art.

It is particularly interesting to view Erling Neby’s collection at the Pori Art Museum, the home museum of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation’s collection. It allows for a meaningful comparison with the works from the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation. The collaboration with Parisian gallery owner Denise René has brought works by the same artists into both collections, and many of the artists – Victor Vasarely, Max Bill, Olle Baertling, Jean Gorin, Jean Dewasne, to name a few – have participated in exhibitions organized by Maire Gullichsen on several occasions.

Josef Albers’ color theory literally made its way to Finland through Maire Gullichsen, and for this reason, three of Albers’ Homage to the Square works from 1956-62 in Neby’s collection will be given a place of honor in the exhibition. It is also pleasing that two important Finnish artists for the Pori Art Museum, Lars-Gunnar Nordström and Paul Osipow, are strongly represented in this internationally significant collection.

A book will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, edited by the museum director Marketta Seppälä. The head curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, Karin Hellandsjö, will address both the collection’s origin and its collector in the book’s article. The book will be released in February.
