BLICK: NEW NORDIC VIDEO

The use of film and video as means of expression in contemporary art increased significantly during the 1990s, particularly in the Nordic countries. The BLICK project, initiated by Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1999, showcases new Nordic film and video art. The 2001 BLICK compilation has been curated by Rebecca Gordon Nesbitt (NIFCA) as well as Maria Lind and Cecilia Widenheim (Moderna Museet).

BLICK 2001 presents approximately 50 works by 40 artists. The videos are not organized under a single theme. Instead, BLICK 2001 encompasses a variety of approaches, reflecting current trends in video art. These include, for example, a recurring narrative element, which may take the form of pure documentary or evoke the spontaneity of home videos. Many artists comment on societal structures in their works—urban patterns, and aesthetic, social, or political frameworks. Some pieces utilize still images in a painterly manner, creating an emotionally charged, subtle loop.

The series features videos by artists such as: Erik Aalto, Mats Adelman, J. Tobias Anderson, Jari Alakoskela & Samu Heikkilä, Johanna Billing, Arne Borgan, Estella Burga, Mai Hofstad Gunnes, Inger Lise Hansen, Ronny Hansson, Felice Hapetzder, Ronnit Hasson, Cecilia Lundqvist, Katarina Löfström, Hanna Miettinen, Pekka Niskanen, Bjargey Olafsdottír, Ulf Rollof, Saara Saarela, Carina Bergholm Sundén, Salla Tykkä, and Gitte Villesen.
