ALVAR AALTO 100 YEARS / ALVAR AALTO IN SATAKUNTA

During the jazz festival, an architecture exhibition titled Alvar Aalto in Satakunta is presented in the lecture hall of the Pori Art Museum. The exhibition showcases the work of Finland’s most internationally renowned architect, Alvar Aalto (1897-1978), in Pori and other parts of Satakunta.

Among the internationally significant Aalto buildings in Satakunta are Villa Mairea in Noormarkku and the Kauttua terraced houses in Eura. In the field of urban planning, Aalto’s internationally important work is the Kokemäenjokilaakso area plan, one of the earliest regional land-use plans in Europe. In addition to these well-known works, there is more of Aalto’s everyday production in Satakunta, including wooden prefabricated model houses, industrial and warehouse buildings, and various urban planning proposals.

The exhibition consists mainly of photographs. Original pieces on display include a large map of the Kokemäenjokilaakso area plan and an oil painting that Aalto dedicated to Satakunta. A slide show presents existing Aalto buildings, and a browsing folder includes drawings and textual material. An exhibition catalog is also available in English.
