BARE HOUSE. Pori - Rotterdam - Ulaanbaatar is an international exhibition and publication project that comments on the built environment, refl ecting upon the past and present ideals of modern society through Western welfare states and the Developing World. The project focuses especially on architecture and the dimensions of personal existence. Modernisation with its belief in prefabricated construction and standards is challenged by the potential for autonomous construction. The artists and architects featured in the exhibition come from Finland, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Mongolia. Most of the works in the show were created during artist residencies in Mongolia, the Netherlands and Pori.
Curator: Annu Wilenius.

LARS BREUER, SEBASTIAN FREYTAG AND GUIDO MÜNCH MASTERCOPY
[16.04.2010 - 30.05.2010]
Wing, Mediapoint, Sculpture garden (23.05.2010)
Lars Breuer, Sebastian Freytag and Guido Münch share an interest in various artistic ideologies and movements, such as early 20th-century avantgarde and its successors, the art trends of the Sixties, Minimalism and Conceptual Art. The motto of the group is taken from the Russian avantgarde artist Varvara Stepanova: "Study and know the old, but create the new." KONSORTIUM artists are autonomous but the collaborative work and installations give them a chance to react to the form and content of another’s work. This approach produces various kinds of interesting contrasts and contradictions between their works. KONSORTIUM artists have one thing in common: they each copy their respective historical sources while at the same time contesting both their meaning and its significance for the group’s overall artistic practice. By moving between the original and the copy, between the pattern and its actualisation, between personal ´handwriting´ and digital print, KONSORTIUM investigates the place of art in the field of globalising culture.

LARS BREUER, SEBASTIAN FREYTAG, GUIDO MÜNCH: COVER VERSION
[16.04.2010 - 23.05.2010]
Project Room
The KONSORTIUM artists Lars Breuer, Sebastian Freytag and Guido Münch have created an exhibition entitled Cover Version. The piece consists of works from the collection of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation and works by members of the KONSORTIUM.
The curated selection includes Unto Pusa’s Ympyrä neliössä (Hommage a Delaunay II) [Circle in a square (Hommage a Delaunay II)], Sam Vanni´s graphic series Neljän värin etydejä I-VIII [Four Colour Etudes I-VIII] and a painting by Lars-Gunnar Nordström, Dimensionaalinen tilanne [Dimensional Situation], on which the KONSORTIUM artists have then commented through their own works.
The title Cover Version is an allusion to the practice of creating new versions of existing songs in pop music. Cover Version is a vehicle for the KONSORTIUM artists to reflect upon influences and connections to the history of art – in particular to the collection of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation.

The collection opens up perspectives on the tradition of Finnish and Scandinavian Modernism as well as the field of contemporary art. The collector´s personal and intellectual approach, one that is no stranger to powerful emotion either, delineates a subtle area in art that is informed by Nordic constructivist abstraction and the tradition of colour painting.

MARGARITA ANDREU ENTREVEURE / VIEWER The gesture of the image
[12.02.2010 - 04.04.2010]
Wing, Mediapoint
Espanjalainen kuvataiteilija Margarita Andreu (s. 1953) on syntynyt Kataloniassa, Cercsissä, joka on Barcelonan provinssi. Barcelona on toiminut hänen keskuksenaan. Sieltä käsin Andreu on tehnyt tutkimusmatkoja lähiympäristöön sekä maailman eri suurkaupunkeihin, tallentaen
mm. rakennusten julkisivuja, rakenteita ja arkkitehtonisia yksityiskohtia. Margarita Andreu haluaa houkutella ihmiset havainnoimaan uudella tavalla ympäristöään.

SCULPTURE! Educational exhibition in the Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series
[12.02.2010 - 04.04.2010]
Artists featured in the exhibition are Gunnar Elfgren, Laila Pullinen, Kimmo Pyykkö, Sakari Tohka
Sculptures in bronze, iron or stone are by their very nature permanent. The sense of timelessness and immutability is only intensified by the idea of sculptures resting in the bosom of a museum in carefully regulated conditions. The Sculpture! exhibition investigates the solidity of the link between artworks and the ideas and ideologies of their time. Can present-day audiences approach artworks of past decades with the same freshness as contemporaries did, when the works engaged in the art discourse of their time by either challenging or confirming the then prevalent ideas and attitudes? Can features which challenged the taste of the age or enjoyed general acceptance still touch us in the same way? Does an artwork change because we are different?

UNDER THE SKY AND OVER THE SEA ZINEB SEDIRA
[16.10.2009 - 31.01.2010]
Hall, Wing, Hall, Entrance hall
Zineb Sedira (b. 1963 in Paris, France) is a London-based artist who works in multicultural cities and on three different continents. She was born in Paris to Algerian parents. Through a combination of documentary tradition and Algerian and French contemporary cinema, Sedira´s work examines the flow of immigration from North Africa to Europe. Using video, short film and photography as her media, Sedira investigates the process whereby immigrants abandon the framework of their original culture and start to build a new identity. An identity which demands that they assimilate a new culture and its language. Zineb Sedira´s personal history and her autobiographical images are transformed into a universal experience that raises economic, ecological, geopolitical and global questions.
Sedira´s works embody the powerful oral tradition of storytelling in Arab culture and the characteristic role of women in North Africa as those who pass family stories on to the next generation.
Appearing for the first time in Finland, Sedira brings to the Pori Art Museum short films, photographs and video works.
In co-operation with: New Art Exchange, Nottingham (UK), Bildmuseet, Umeå, Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen.

A WALK IN THE CITY AT NIGHT AN EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITION IN THE MAIRE GULLICHSEN AND MODERNISM SERIES.
[16.10.2009 - 31.01.2010]
Project room
An educational exhibition in the Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series.
A Walk in the City at Night is a journey of exploration into the collections of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation. The paintings and sculptures on view tell the story of a walk through the city and its outskirts at night. The common theme uniting the works is the study of light and dark. The works are interpreted by children, who comment on them and develop their themes further. The journey across the city is a mysterious one. The orange, red and deepening blue tones of the setting sun give way to the electric lights and neons lighting up the night. The paintings are the result of a workshop that encouraged children to immerse themselves in the works, to explore and interpret them freely.

LIFELINES BOB VERSCHUEREN
[12.06.2009 - 27.09.2009]
HALL, WING, MEDIApoint, Sculpture Yard, Entrance hall
The Belgian artist Bob Verschueren is known for his wind and light paintings that he has been making since 1978, but also for vegetable installations that make use of organic, natural materials and which have been the dominant aspect of his work since the mid-1980s. In creating his works, Verschueren always respects nature, listening to the inherent qualities of his material – as if the works were created under the direction of nature herself.
For his show in the Pori Art Museum, Verschueren will create installations from organic materials in the main exhibition hall and the wing. The works are reflections upon the cycle of nature in its changing forms of geometry, colour and materials. Verschueren will create the works using organic waste collected from Pori and nearby areas.
The exhibition is produced in cooperation with the City of Pori Park Maintenance Department.

THE SITE OF PAINTING
[13.02.2009 - 31.05.2009]
HALL, WING, MEDIApoint, Sculpture Yard
What is the status of painting in the field of art in the 2000s? The Site of Painting charts the development of painting and the modernist tradition in Finnish contemporary art. Starting from the 1960s, the tradition of international conceptual art and minimalism declared the demise of painting. Painting in general, structural abstract painting in particular, has enjoyed a central, canonised status in Finnish art. Modernism was channelled into non-figurative painting. Postmodern art theory arrived in Finland in the 1980s, and the artforms that had previously been marginal or "new" became mainstream, such as conceptual and environmental art, performance and installation art. This was also reflected in the status of painting.
The artists in the exhibition are Terike Haapoja, Toni Hautamäki, Terhi Heino, Aino Kannisto, Jouni Kujansuu, Jaakko Niemelä, Jussi Niva, Miika Nyyssönen, Tarja Pitkänen-Walter, Anssi Pulkkinen, Jukka Rusanen and Tatu Tuominen. Read more >>

AUTUMN NIGHTS, SUMMER NIGHTS, THESE ARE THE MOODS I SEARCH FOR KAIN TAPPER
[13.02.2009 - 25.05.2009]
PROJECT ROOM
Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series
The sculptor Kain Tapper (6 June 1930 – 7 August 2004) was from the 1950s popularly known as a nature lyricist, a Pantheist whose art was down-to-earth and aspired to balance, According to Tapper himself, he thought with a pen, by drawing. But he was first and foremost a sculptor, whose work was characterised by an abstract idiom, a subtle dialogue between the shape of the piece and its material.
The exhibition is produced in cooperation with the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation. Read more >>

UNTO PUSA - THE MONUMENTALITY AND COSMIC SHAPES OF FIGURE
[10.10.2008 - 01.02.2009]
PROJECT ROOM
The Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series
Exact and geometric shapes are admired, but only an attentive and sensitive interpreter can give geometrical shapes rhythmically expressive life. Creative art is not limp aesthetics or secretively mumbling enthusiasm. All art is living dynamics, creating and shaping its own environment. So wrote Unto Pusa in his class book Plastillinen sommittelu (Plastic Composition), in which he also discussed the limitations to the teaching of art.
The exhibition The Monumentality and Cosmic Shapes of Figure reviews the oeuvre of Unto Pusa, art theorist and master of Finnish monumental painting, through the thematics of the Three Graces, which is typical of Pusa’s art.

‘LIGHTSHADOWCOMPLEX’ MISCHA KUBALL
[10.10.2008 - 01.02.2009]
HALL, WING, HALL, ENTRANCE HALL
The autumn season at Pori Art Museum opens with the exhibition by German media and light artist, Mischa Kuball (b. 1959), a professor at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. For over 20 years, Kuball has been studying light and the possibilities of using it in various forms, and LightShadowComplex will be his first exhibition in Finland. Kuball is well known for his works for which he reshapes built environments and spaces using light. In 1990, for instance, for his six-week-long project Megazeichen (Megasigns) he directed, after office hours, all the lights on the floors of a skyscraper in Düsseldorf, decorating the cityscape with huge symbols that with mathematical precision were continually changing.
At the Pori Art Museum, Kuball combines light with numbers and letters to build a work that unsettles both the viewer’s ability to interpret shapes and his sense of balance.
To accompany the exhibition the artist’s work is also presented in a large publication, Mischa Kuball ...in progress, Projects 1980–2007, which will be on sale at the Pori Art Museum shop.
The organisations collaborating on this exhibition include: the Kunstverein Hannover, the Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Art, the Beijing Royal Art Museum, the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and the Centre d’Art Contemporain Passerelle, Brest.
Kuball’s space-exploring works will be built at the Hall, Wing and Lobby of the Pori Art Museum.

HALL, WING
Exhibition artists: David Blandy (UK), Hanna Haaslahti (FI), Eva Koch (DK), Tuula Närhinen (FI), Jaana Partanen (FI),Fredrik Raddum (NO), Tuomo Rosenlund (FI), Marika Seidler (DK), Jari Silomäki (FI), David Svensson (SV).The exhibition Phenomena at the Pori Art Museum showcases artists from five different countries. The aim of the exhibition as well as the exhibition publication is to discuss and question a number of phenomena in affluent societies today. The phenomena can be as simple as light, seeing, hearing or as complex as morality, nature or youth. It is characteristic of our time that we have to learn to accept change, but there is also the dichotomy of the importance of national identity and the need for cosmopolitan thinking and global tolerance. People in the welfare societies of the Nordic countries find themselves in a conflict between the Third World on one hand and overflowing wealth on the other.
Many questions are being asked. How are we to handle all the phenomena that spring from global warming, new technology and increasing poverty? There is also a lack of understanding of the changes that are taking place in the present. Often enough, seeing things at a close distance is more difficult than being open-minded. We want to know what is happening in our world, but at the same time we struggle with the guilt of our own ineptness. The Phenomena exhibition gives the audience an invisible magnifying glass with which to observe the phenomena around them as well as the effects of those phenomena from various distances. UNTO PUSA - CUBISM AND NATIONAL ILLUSTRATION - MAIRE GULLICHSEN AND MODERNISM
[15.02.2008 - 25.05.2008]
PROJECT ROOM
Unto Pusa painted his first cubist work entitled Katunäkymä (Street View) in 1949. The painting is also known as Cubist Chevreuse. Pusa had worked in the small town near Paris for a decade and a half, painting canvases in the style of Cézanne, as miniature worlds free of any illusion. For Pusa, Cézanne´s art was not just about the stylistic simplification of form. At its core was an effort to understand the thinking that went into the composition of a painting. In the late 1940s, Pusa visited Fernand Léger’s retrospective in Paris. It made an enduring impression on him. He came to understand that all forms within a composition are equal such that the choice of subject matter no longer occupies a dominant position.

IT’S ABOUT THE ART OF OUR TIME - MAIRE GULLICHSEN

HALL, WING, PROJECT ROOM, MEDIApoint
” Maire Gullichsen (1907-1990) was a legend in her lifetime. She, if any Finnish woman who lived in the 20th century, had the makings of a hero myth, but heroism is understood in male terms, and is thus poorly suited to Gullichsen’s personality.” Tuula Karjalainen in the commemorative book on Maire Gullichsen, 2007

The Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation and the Pori Art Museum celebrate the occasion with a special exhibition and the publishing of a catalogue and commemorative book in association with the Central Art Archives of the Finnish National Gallery. A sign can evoke its meaning within a tangible environment filled with signs. In the exhibition SIGNS the works could be described by the words: ‘be for me a sign of something’. They move through a profusion of basic symbolism, human facial expressions, sign language and gestures, in which the viewer can find both signs and significance. The basic elements of colour, shape and surface symbolise and create a bridge between the structures of art, philosophy and everyday life.

‘I was given a typewriter to use. The theme for the autumn season at the Pori Art Museum is the relationship between people and art; art and life.
Tero Kiiskinen (1948–1996) was a stage designer who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1974, after which he spent a further year studying at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in Poland. In 1975 he began making long trips to Asia where, in total, he eventually spent some six years.

COLLECTORS EYE
[08.09.2006 - 07.01.2007]
Hall
The autumn theme at the Pori Art Museum is the relationship between art and people. Art records and reflects, builds and describes both itself and the life force of the society in which it is born. When art collectors expand their collections, they build an image not only of art and its development but also of themselves. Like the artist, the collector is both an actor and the object of the action, both the messenger and the recipient. The collector is free to look for new ways of understanding and interaction, but is also bound by a strong tradition, by existing and established forms of interpretation and thinking. Through three collections, the exhibition THE COLLECTOR’S EYE displays three subjective, partly overlapping views of contemporary Finnish and international art.

[27.01.2006 - 28.05.2006]
HALL, PROJECT ROOM
The theme of Urban Creatures arises from the phenomena common to modern big cities. Isolation, narcissism, insecurity and fragmented interaction are the flip side of the culture of mass urban societies, where individuals must try to construct an identity for themselves. The interpretation and construction of reality, just as the formation of self-image, take place under the powerful influence of the media and their codifications. The artists of the exhibition all live in Berlin, although they represent six different nationalities. Their sculptures, installations, videos and photos explore the urban matrix as a space of everyday life and as cultural production. The exhibition is curated by Dorothee Bienert, an art historian from Berlin. The artists are Ulf Aminde, Sergio Belinchon, Shahram Entekhabi, Remy Markowitsch, Bjørn Melhus, Olaf Nicolai, Maya Roos, Michaela Schweiger, Mathilde Ter Heijne. Read more >>

FROM DRAWING TO PAINTING TO DRAWING Jonathan Lasker
[16.09.2005 - 08.01.2006]
HALL
From Drawing to Painting to Drawing offers the public an opportunity to get to know the work of American artist Jonathan Lasker. The parameters of art have expanded as developments in photography, video and multimedia have redefined the role of traditional fine art techniques. With the advent of new technology, and the tools it offers for artistic expression, there is renewed interest in the relationship between space, surface, and the expression inherent in line. In this exhibition the emphasis is on drawing. The starting point is drawing as an independent art form and its role in painting.

FROM CUBISM TO CONCRETISM
[01.12.2004 - 30.01.2005]
WING
Early Norwegian avant-garde. In the artist’s work, the avant-garde art of the early 20th century denoted the replacement of the line by the analysis of the meaning of the surface and the plane. In the last century, Norwegian nonfigurative art had two heydays. In the 1920s and 1930s Norwegian artists got to know Cubism and Purism in Paris. In the 1950s and 1960s Norwegian art rose from the ruins of World War II. Ragnhild Kaarbø (1888-1949), Ragnhild Keyser (1889-1943) and Charlotte Wankel (1888-1969) can be regarded as the first Norwegian cubists, pioneers of nonfigurative art. The post-war geometric school of art is represented by Gunnar S. Gundersen (1921-1983) and Jakob Weidemann (1923-2001).

FLIP. Pocket-sized stories
Flip-book is a pre-cinematic medium familiar to most of us. When a stack of sheets with succeeding phases of animation is flipped, an impression of moving image is created. The same principle is at work in cinema and is based on the principle of afterimage. Pori Art Museum has asked three artists – Johanna Antinkaapo, Adrianne Gallinari and Jenni Rope – to create their own flip-books. The books are then used as models for a workshop, which focuses on the production of animation with the same technique. The artists take part in the workshop, too.

PHILOSOPHY OF MONTAGE, MONTAGE OF PHILOSOPHY KIMMO SARJE
[09.04.2003 - 25.05.2003]
Kimmo Sarje (b. 1951) started his career as a conceptual artist in the mid 1980s questioning the symbols of the sublime of the two superpowers of the time, the Soviet Union and the United States. In his simple montages he painted Barnett Newman’s stripes on official Soviet Lenin posters. Sarje continued producing a series of shows and art projects in which he deconstructed Lenin cult and the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. A central issue in Sarje’s sots art is to juxtapose ideas and icons of Modernism and Socialism as he did, for example, in his series about Lenin and Kazimir Malevich. Sarje is also known for his multiple contacts with Russian and Baltic artists. When studying in the
Whitney Independent Study Program in New York 1986-87 Sarje became acquainted with the Russian emigrant sots artists Komar & Melamid who helped him to build contacts with the younger generation in Moscow.
The tradition of Modernism in Finland has also been one of the targets of Sarje’s work. To accept the conventions and hierarchies of the so called Nordic taste doesn’t respond to his critical standpoint. In a series of montage exhibitions in the late 1980s and early 1990s Sarje deconstructed the rhetoric of Alvar Aalto’s design by mixing parts of the architects’ original chairs and lamps plus his famous glass vases with the language of modernist painting and popular culture.
In the mid 1990s Sarje concentrated in the questions of the Finnish modernism before and after the First World War. He published a book about Sigurd Frosterus’ architecture and worldview. Frosterus was a leading rationalist modernist during the first decades of the 20th century in Finland. In Sarje’s “Dawn” exhibition 1999 in his photomontages he interpreted Frosterus’ aesthetics, too.
Questions about abstraction, decoration and monumental architecture have also been topics of Sarje’s art. In his New York -series as well as in his montages about Stalinist architecture he has mixed the dogmas of Modernist abstraction with classical architectural decoration. Cultural parallels are a stimulus of Sarje’s work. The analogues of Maya architecture in Mexico and the national socialist monumental architecture of Albert Speer in Nürnberg was a starting point of Sarje’s exhibition “Quo vadis monumentum?” in 1998.
Sarje is a member of two artist groups: Concept Konzert, a group of five Finnish conceptualists, and Elkida, a group of three Scandinavian artists. In many of his projects he has collaborated with his colleagues. For example, all his video works Sarje realized together with Kimmo Koskela, a well-known videoartist.
Kimmo Sarje works both as an artist and as an essayist and university teacher. He started his career in the mid 1970s as an art critic. He has published books about contemporary art and history of ideas in Finland. He wrote his academic theses about Sigurd Frosterus 2000. As an artist Sarje is self-taught, however, his work is well represented in many main art museums in Finland. His criticism and montages have been studied recently in two academic dissertations.

PLAY & CONTROL
[22.03.2002 - 02.06.2002]
The exhibition Play and Control is about the tension between the desire to play (the precondition for every creative process) and the necessity to have a legitimated form.
The curator asked the artists to start focusing their attention on the child at play. The child moves its object and toys countless times. It does not play with a previously formulated result in mind. The aim of the game is the game itself. The child is free and without obligations. Now its educator comes and says, ‘make a house’ or ‘draw a horse’. In so doing they have a very specific aim in mind. The play is given a structure. But at the same time the child loses its pure desire to play, its unbridled, totally free creativity.
The artist is able to retain some of this original childlike ability. This is after all the precondition for creative work. But then a new obstacle arises: the unwritten rules and regulations of the art world. In order to be visible, tangible and discussible (not to mention ’saleable’), both the creative process and the way it is presented have to be cast in a very specific mould. This mould is subject to trends. To what extend should the artist to be prepared to compromise? When the form becomes more important than the content there is a danger of academic dullness setting in.
To summarise: the creative process itself, which comes very close to a young child’s play, does not lead to really visible results, and too much attention paid to form and presentation brings with it academism and repetition. What is interesting is the tension between the two. The work of the eight artists shows evidence of it.
ALICE BOURCEREAU (F) is putting with the complicity of the Museum’s staff marbles in the pockets of the visitor’s coats. MARIE BELENOTTI-BELLOT (F) shows a videotape were a young woman is blowing on a waffle full of sugar. The sugar is dispersing in slow motion. ELISA COISSARD (F) lives in Berlin. She’s preparing a moveable puzzle as a 3D labyrinth. JULIEN COLLIEUX (F) is also living and working in Berlin. He is making a marionette of 8 meters height. The visitors can make a drawing by handling it. The drawing will become part of the exhibition. There will be a permanently changing installation of enlarged playing cards by JOSEPH JESSEN (D). NADIA NAVEAU (B) is showing a big playground with monumental sculptures inspired by war games and toy soldiers. TANJA RAU (DK) is making a colourful bas-relief on the phenomena of bus-stations. And finally TEREZA VELIKOVA (CZ) will show an installation inspired by her memory as a young child trying to take a ball to big for her tiny hands.

AUTOJA - CARS KARI CAVÈN
[22.09.2001 - 02.12.2001]
Kari Cavén who began his career as a painter, moved in the 1980`s after experimenting with different materials to tridimensional expression. Instead of traditional sculpture Cavén is known for his sensitive object collages, which have playful humour in them. Cavén uses wood, metal, recycled materials and scrap as materials in his works.
Kari Cavén examines the surrounding world, also in a concrete way, when searching new materials for his works. Cavén´s object works contain familiar elements, which are present in the everyday life. He makes art out of utility articles and on elsewhere restores art objects into daily use.
Perception, which comes into being through seeing and combining, is strongly present in Cavén´s works. The variety of the visual and conceptual references in his works create a space for new meanings. Cavén´s works contain multiple references to the nature of objects and materials and also references to their use, cultural history and art history.
In the Pori Art Museum´s exhibition hall Cavén carries out an installation entitled Cars, which consists of dozens of miniature cars filling the entire exhibition hall. Inspiration to these have primarily been wheels but also the artist´s own childhood with the building and driving hill cars. The car wheels are linked together with different kinds of structures; wood curves, straight and bend metalbars, tubes etc. forming own personality to every car.
Skulpturens Hus in Stockholm showed Kari Cavéns exhibition Konst och Bilar (Art and Cars) on Spring 2000. Pori Art Museum´s exhibition introduces also Cavén´s newest cars. There is also a car track where children can drive pedal cars.
Kari Cavén was born in Savonlinna in 1954. He studied 1976-77 in Free Art school, 1977-78 in University of Art and Design in Helsinki and 1978-82 in Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. He has participated in various international exhibitions as in Venice Biennale in 1988, 1990, 1995.

TRIPTYCHOS POST HISTORICUS BRACO DIMITRIJEVIC
[10.06.2000 - 03.09.2000]
The Yugoslavian artist Braco Dimitrijevic (born 1948) has realized a series of works since 1976 named Triptychos Post Historicus where he sets works belonging to the collections of art museums into a new context. Dimitrijevic=s triptych always contains three parts selected by the artist: a work of art from the museum=s collections, an object and a natural product. The context created by the elements combined in the same space and time frees the work of art from established interpretations. By breaking the conventional ways of placing works on display Dimitrijevic exposes the expectations and preconceived interpretation models connected with the work of art.
The Triptychos Post Historicus installation draws a parallel between culture and nature. It coincides values that are traditionally held both physically and conceptually opposed such as aesthetic and practical value and nature, as well as reverse concepts of time: the historical value of the art work is reflected against a backdrop of everyday and the cycle of nature. Braco Dimitrijevic=s installation deliberates on the formulation of meanings, the accumulation of historical significance and the process of aesthetic perception. The tensions between individual elements of the work arise from their physical connection, as the object serves as a pedestal for the work of art.
The Triptychos Post Historicus to be realized in the Pori Art Museum is the last part in the series of the artist=s installations. The installation combines musical instruments and products of the traditional woodworking industry of the Satakunta region with works selected from the collections of the Maire Gullichsen=s Art Foundation. The collection is personalized to Maire Gullichsen through photographs that portray a subject, a cultural personality and a collector.

[17.03.2000 - 24.04.2000]
HALL
Obsession The video and photographic installation of the Polish artist Maciej Toporowicz (born 1958) elaborates on the connection between German sculpture and architecture of the 1930s to the American commercial aesthetics of the 1990s. The black & white photographs and video projections punctuated by music delicately portray the relation of the ideal images of people of our own time to the superhuman ideals of Fascism. Toporowicz combines the stylish logos of the American Calvin Klein brand - Eternity, Obsession, Escape - to photographs of sculpture and architecture of the Nazi era and to details of incinerators and heaps of personal objects.

HALL
The French artist Michel Verjux (born 1957) has since the 1980s created spatial art works using no other material than light, which he considers the most essential element in visual arts. Through his mostly round, intensive reflections of white light Verjux accentuates the architectural characteristics of the space.
