UNDER THE SKY AND OVER THE SEA ZINEB SEDIRA
[16.10.2009 - 31.01.2010]
Hall, Wing, Hall, Entrance hall
Zineb Sedira (b. 1963 in Paris, France) is a London-based artist who works in multicultural cities and on three different continents. She was born in Paris to Algerian parents. Through a combination of documentary tradition and Algerian and French contemporary cinema, Sedira´s work examines the flow of immigration from North Africa to Europe. Using video, short film and photography as her media, Sedira investigates the process whereby immigrants abandon the framework of their original culture and start to build a new identity. An identity which demands that they assimilate a new culture and its language. Zineb Sedira´s personal history and her autobiographical images are transformed into a universal experience that raises economic, ecological, geopolitical and global questions.
Sedira´s works embody the powerful oral tradition of storytelling in Arab culture and the characteristic role of women in North Africa as those who pass family stories on to the next generation.
Appearing for the first time in Finland, Sedira brings to the Pori Art Museum short films, photographs and video works.
In co-operation with: New Art Exchange, Nottingham (UK), Bildmuseet, Umeå, Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen.

A WALK IN THE CITY AT NIGHT AN EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITION IN THE MAIRE GULLICHSEN AND MODERNISM SERIES.
[16.10.2009 - 31.01.2010]
Project room
An educational exhibition in the Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series.
A Walk in the City at Night is a journey of exploration into the collections of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation. The paintings and sculptures on view tell the story of a walk through the city and its outskirts at night. The common theme uniting the works is the study of light and dark. The works are interpreted by children, who comment on them and develop their themes further. The journey across the city is a mysterious one. The orange, red and deepening blue tones of the setting sun give way to the electric lights and neons lighting up the night. The paintings are the result of a workshop that encouraged children to immerse themselves in the works, to explore and interpret them freely.

LIFELINES BOB VERSCHUEREN
[12.06.2009 - 27.09.2009]
HALL, WING, MEDIApoint, Sculpture Yard, Entrance hall
The Belgian artist Bob Verschueren is known for his wind and light paintings that he has been making since 1978, but also for vegetable installations that make use of organic, natural materials and which have been the dominant aspect of his work since the mid-1980s. In creating his works, Verschueren always respects nature, listening to the inherent qualities of his material – as if the works were created under the direction of nature herself.
For his show in the Pori Art Museum, Verschueren will create installations from organic materials in the main exhibition hall and the wing. The works are reflections upon the cycle of nature in its changing forms of geometry, colour and materials. Verschueren will create the works using organic waste collected from Pori and nearby areas.
The exhibition is produced in cooperation with the City of Pori Park Maintenance Department.

THE SITE OF PAINTING
[13.02.2009 - 31.05.2009]
HALL, WING, MEDIApoint, Sculpture Yard
What is the status of painting in the field of art in the 2000s? The Site of Painting charts the development of painting and the modernist tradition in Finnish contemporary art. Starting from the 1960s, the tradition of international conceptual art and minimalism declared the demise of painting. Painting in general, structural abstract painting in particular, has enjoyed a central, canonised status in Finnish art. Modernism was channelled into non-figurative painting. Postmodern art theory arrived in Finland in the 1980s, and the artforms that had previously been marginal or "new" became mainstream, such as conceptual and environmental art, performance and installation art. This was also reflected in the status of painting.
The artists in the exhibition are Terike Haapoja, Toni Hautamäki, Terhi Heino, Aino Kannisto, Jouni Kujansuu, Jaakko Niemelä, Jussi Niva, Miika Nyyssönen, Tarja Pitkänen-Walter, Anssi Pulkkinen, Jukka Rusanen and Tatu Tuominen. Read more >>

AUTUMN NIGHTS, SUMMER NIGHTS, THESE ARE THE MOODS I SEARCH FOR KAIN TAPPER
[13.02.2009 - 25.05.2009]
PROJECT ROOM
Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series
The sculptor Kain Tapper (6 June 1930 – 7 August 2004) was from the 1950s popularly known as a nature lyricist, a Pantheist whose art was down-to-earth and aspired to balance, According to Tapper himself, he thought with a pen, by drawing. But he was first and foremost a sculptor, whose work was characterised by an abstract idiom, a subtle dialogue between the shape of the piece and its material.
The exhibition is produced in cooperation with the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation. Read more >>

UNTO PUSA - THE MONUMENTALITY AND COSMIC SHAPES OF FIGURE
[10.10.2008 - 01.02.2009]
PROJECT ROOM
The Maire Gullichsen and Modernism series
Exact and geometric shapes are admired, but only an attentive and sensitive interpreter can give geometrical shapes rhythmically expressive life. Creative art is not limp aesthetics or secretively mumbling enthusiasm. All art is living dynamics, creating and shaping its own environment. So wrote Unto Pusa in his class book Plastillinen sommittelu (Plastic Composition), in which he also discussed the limitations to the teaching of art.
The exhibition The Monumentality and Cosmic Shapes of Figure reviews the oeuvre of Unto Pusa, art theorist and master of Finnish monumental painting, through the thematics of the Three Graces, which is typical of Pusa’s art.

‘LIGHTSHADOWCOMPLEX’ MISCHA KUBALL
[10.10.2008 - 01.02.2009]
HALL, WING, HALL, ENTRANCE HALL
The autumn season at Pori Art Museum opens with the exhibition by German media and light artist, Mischa Kuball (b. 1959), a professor at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. For over 20 years, Kuball has been studying light and the possibilities of using it in various forms, and LightShadowComplex will be his first exhibition in Finland. Kuball is well known for his works for which he reshapes built environments and spaces using light. In 1990, for instance, for his six-week-long project Megazeichen (Megasigns) he directed, after office hours, all the lights on the floors of a skyscraper in Düsseldorf, decorating the cityscape with huge symbols that with mathematical precision were continually changing.
At the Pori Art Museum, Kuball combines light with numbers and letters to build a work that unsettles both the viewer’s ability to interpret shapes and his sense of balance.
To accompany the exhibition the artist’s work is also presented in a large publication, Mischa Kuball ...in progress, Projects 1980–2007, which will be on sale at the Pori Art Museum shop.
The organisations collaborating on this exhibition include: the Kunstverein Hannover, the Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Art, the Beijing Royal Art Museum, the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and the Centre d’Art Contemporain Passerelle, Brest.
Kuball’s space-exploring works will be built at the Hall, Wing and Lobby of the Pori Art Museum.

PHENOMENA
[15.02.2008 - 25.05.2008]
HALL, WING
Exhibition artists: David Blandy (UK), Hanna Haaslahti (FI), Eva Koch (DK), Tuula Närhinen (FI), Jaana Partanen (FI),Fredrik Raddum (NO), Tuomo Rosenlund (FI), Marika Seidler (DK), Jari Silomäki (FI), David Svensson (SV).The exhibition Phenomena at the Pori Art Museum showcases artists from five different countries. The aim of the exhibition as well as the exhibition publication is to discuss and question a number of phenomena in affluent societies today. The phenomena can be as simple as light, seeing, hearing or as complex as morality, nature or youth. It is characteristic of our time that we have to learn to accept change, but there is also the dichotomy of the importance of national identity and the need for cosmopolitan thinking and global tolerance. People in the welfare societies of the Nordic countries find themselves in a conflict between the Third World on one hand and overflowing wealth on the other.
Many questions are being asked. How are we to handle all the phenomena that spring from global warming, new technology and increasing poverty? There is also a lack of understanding of the changes that are taking place in the present. Often enough, seeing things at a close distance is more difficult than being open-minded. We want to know what is happening in our world, but at the same time we struggle with the guilt of our own ineptness. The Phenomena exhibition gives the audience an invisible magnifying glass with which to observe the phenomena around them as well as the effects of those phenomena from various distances. UNTO PUSA - CUBISM AND NATIONAL ILLUSTRATION - MAIRE GULLICHSEN AND MODERNISM
[15.02.2008 - 25.05.2008]
PROJECT ROOM
Unto Pusa painted his first cubist work entitled Katunäkymä (Street View) in 1949. The painting is also known as Cubist Chevreuse. Pusa had worked in the small town near Paris for a decade and a half, painting canvases in the style of Cézanne, as miniature worlds free of any illusion. For Pusa, Cézanne´s art was not just about the stylistic simplification of form. At its core was an effort to understand the thinking that went into the composition of a painting. In the late 1940s, Pusa visited Fernand Léger’s retrospective in Paris. It made an enduring impression on him. He came to understand that all forms within a composition are equal such that the choice of subject matter no longer occupies a dominant position.

IT’S ABOUT THE ART OF OUR TIME - MAIRE GULLICHSEN
[27.05.2007 - 30.09.2007]
HALL, WING, PROJECT ROOM, MEDIApoint
” Maire Gullichsen (1907-1990) was a legend in her lifetime. She, if any Finnish woman who lived in the 20th century, had the makings of a hero myth, but heroism is understood in male terms, and is thus poorly suited to Gullichsen’s personality.” Tuula Karjalainen in the commemorative book on Maire Gullichsen, 2007
This year marks the centenary of the birth of Maire Gullichsen. The Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation and the Pori Art Museum celebrate the occasion with a special exhibition and the publishing of a catalogue and commemorative book in association with the Central Art Archives of the Finnish National Gallery. SIGNS
[10.11.2006 - 07.01.2007]
Wing
A sign can evoke its meaning within a tangible environment filled with signs. In the exhibition SIGNS the works could be described by the words: ‘be for me a sign of something’. They move through a profusion of basic symbolism, human facial expressions, sign language and gestures, in which the viewer can find both signs and significance. The basic elements of colour, shape and surface symbolise and create a bridge between the structures of art, philosophy and everyday life.

‘I was given a typewriter to use. As promised, here is the circular of my diary, such as it is, unchanged, with nothing added, with emotions of the moment, some even quite intimate, but let it be.’ (Tero Kiiskinen, in his diary, 1976.) The theme for the autumn season at the Pori Art Museum is the relationship between people and art; art and life.
Tero Kiiskinen (1948–1996) was a stage designer who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1974, after which he spent a further year studying at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in Poland. In 1975 he began making long trips to Asia where, in total, he eventually spent some six years.

COLLECTORS EYE
[08.09.2006 - 07.01.2007]
Hall
The autumn theme at the Pori Art Museum is the relationship between art and people. Art records and reflects, builds and describes both itself and the life force of the society in which it is born. When art collectors expand their collections, they build an image not only of art and its development but also of themselves. Like the artist, the collector is both an actor and the object of the action, both the messenger and the recipient. The collector is free to look for new ways of understanding and interaction, but is also bound by a strong tradition, by existing and established forms of interpretation and thinking. Through three collections, the exhibition THE COLLECTOR’S EYE displays three subjective, partly overlapping views of contemporary Finnish and international art.

[27.01.2006 - 28.05.2006]
HALL, PROJECT ROOM
The theme of Urban Creatures arises from the phenomena common to modern big cities. Isolation, narcissism, insecurity and fragmented interaction are the flip side of the culture of mass urban societies, where individuals must try to construct an identity for themselves. The interpretation and construction of reality, just as the formation of self-image, take place under the powerful influence of the media and their codifications. The artists of the exhibition all live in Berlin, although they represent six different nationalities. Their sculptures, installations, videos and photos explore the urban matrix as a space of everyday life and as cultural production. The exhibition is curated by Dorothee Bienert, an art historian from Berlin. The artists are Ulf Aminde, Sergio Belinchon, Shahram Entekhabi, Remy Markowitsch, Bjørn Melhus, Olaf Nicolai, Maya Roos, Michaela Schweiger, Mathilde Ter Heijne. Read more >>

HALL
From Drawing to Painting to Drawing offers the public an opportunity to get to know the work of American artist Jonathan Lasker. The parameters of art have expanded as developments in photography, video and multimedia have redefined the role of traditional fine art techniques. With the advent of new technology, and the tools it offers for artistic expression, there is renewed interest in the relationship between space, surface, and the expression inherent in line. In this exhibition the emphasis is on drawing. The starting point is drawing as an independent art form and its role in painting.

For some years now, the Belgian artist and historian Koen Broucke has been studying the lives of certain famous and forgotten artists, including composers and writers. Liszt-Broucke, Our Travelling Circus Life, Ode to Megalomania is a painting and video art installation based on a series of documented performances given by Broucke on valuable grand pianos in different parts of Central Europe. Broucke painted a series of pictures based on the documentary footage and used these paintings in the creation of his installation. In his piano performances, Broucke imitates the manners of Franz Liszt. The exhibition makes a humorous comment on the myth of the Romantic Artist. Read more >>

BLACK BUTTERFLY Kiba Lumberg
[18.02.2005 - 03.04.2005]
WING
Black Butterfly. Kiba Lumberg (b. 1956 in Lappeenranta) is known in Finland as a keen observer of the ethnic and cultural dimensions of her own Romani background. Both a writer and an artist, Lumberg characteristically explores the roles of women in her exuberant work. Focusing on one artist, the show extends the overall picture of the Samaa maata – Side by side project and exhibition, produced in 1997 by the Pori Art Museum, that explored ethnic minorities in Finland from the perspective of art. A book with text in Finnish and English is published in conjunction with the exhibition, with articles by Sirkku Dölle, Keeper in the National Museum of Finland; Leena Eräsaari, Ph.D., professor; Leena-Maija Rossi, Ph.D., researcher and critic; and Matti Salakka, MA, media researcher. FROM CUBISM TO CONCRETISM
[01.12.2004 - 30.01.2005]
WING
Early Norwegian avant-garde. In the artist’s work, the avant-garde art of the early 20th century denoted the replacement of the line by the analysis of the meaning of the surface and the plane. In the last century, Norwegian nonfigurative art had two heydays. In the 1920s and 1930s Norwegian artists got to know Cubism and Purism in Paris. In the 1950s and 1960s Norwegian art rose from the ruins of World War II. Ragnhild Kaarbø (1888-1949), Ragnhild Keyser (1889-1943) and Charlotte Wankel (1888-1969) can be regarded as the first Norwegian cubists, pioneers of nonfigurative art. The post-war geometric school of art is represented by Gunnar S. Gundersen (1921-1983) and Jakob Weidemann (1923-2001).

DECORATED EVIL II Tom Osmonen
[01.12.2004 - 30.01.2005]

At the same time, the wallpaper reminds us of the evil within, inside the four walls of home, the genetically built-in component in every one of us. Read more >>

Ekström will realize a new installation for the art museum.

FLIP // TASKUKOKOISIA TARINOITA
[03.09.2003 - 23.11.2003]
PROJECT ROOM
FLIP. Pocket-sized stories
Flip-book is a pre-cinematic medium familiar to most of us. When a stack of sheets with succeeding phases of animation is flipped, an impression of moving image is created. The same principle is at work in cinema and is based on the principle of afterimage. Pori Art Museum has asked three artists – Johanna Antinkaapo, Adrianne Gallinari and Jenni Rope – to create their own flip-books. The books are then used as models for a workshop, which focuses on the production of animation with the same technique. The artists take part in the workshop, too.

Obsession The video and photographic installation of the Polish artist Maciej Toporowicz (born 1958) elaborates on the connection between German sculpture and architecture of the 1930s to the American commercial aesthetics of the 1990s. The black & white photographs and video projections punctuated by music delicately portray the relation of the ideal images of people of our own time to the superhuman ideals of Fascism. Toporowicz combines the stylish logos of the American Calvin Klein brand - Eternity, Obsession, Escape - to photographs of sculpture and architecture of the Nazi era and to details of incinerators and heaps of personal objects.
