Build-up
Jenni Yppärilä
20.03.2020 – 27.09.2020
MEDIApoint

Jenni Yppärilä’s art blurs the line between painting and sculpture. Since 2012 she has been documenting built environments in Finland and elsewhere in the form on three-dimensional paintings. Yppärilä’s interest in buildings is primarily sociological: buildings are an expression of lived history and the present moment, of the values and changes in society, and of the social environment of individuals. Detached from their contexts, buildings are no longer places of passage but objects that can be viewed as portraits of society and its members.

Build-up is a work that explores agglomeration. Compared with Yppärilä’s earlier work, it represents a new, more monumental and spatial approach. Instead of separate buildings, the work presents us with a number of façades joined together. Yppärilä creates her works by taking photographs of existing buildings, and over the years she has amassed thousands of these documentary pictures. Build-up features a selection from the archive. It explores the processes of agglomeration that take place in Yppärilä’s practice and in the material world, paralleled by the accelerating build-up of stress in society and in the life of individuals. Although the work incorporates a point of fracture and references to overload, the mood tends towards gentleness and hope. Build-up can just as well be seen as a collection of buildings that bear signs of lived life.

Jenni Yppärilä (b. 1980, Oulainen) is a visual artist who graduated from Aalto University in 2010. She lives and works in Helsinki. Yppärilä has work in the collections of Kiasma, Oulu Art Museum, Pori Art Museum, Tampere Art Museum and Turku Art Museum.
The exhibition is generously supported by the Arts Council of Uusimaa.
