BUILD-UP
20.03.2020 - 27.09.2020
JENNI YPPÄRILÄ

Build-up is a work that explores agglomeration. Compared with Yppärilä's earlier work, it represents a new, more monumental and spatial approach. Instead of separate buildings, the work presents us with a number of façades joined together. Yppärilä creates her works by taking photographs of existing buildings, and over the years she has amassed thousands of these documentary pictures. Build-up features a selection from the archive.

ADRIAN MELIS

For artist Adrian Melis and many others living in Cuba in the early 1990 's reality existed between the long shadow cast by Fidel Castro 's glorious revolution and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Shaped by this paradoxical state of existence Adrian Melis 's practice can be described as a series of inconspicuous interventions, often poetic and surreal, which address, systemic political and corporate corruption, political apathy, labour markets, bureaucratic inefficiency, and their effect on the social fabric.

LONG FAREWELLS
20.03.2020 - 27.09.2020
OLA VASILJEVA

Ola Vasiljeva engages with the Pori Museum primarily through its architectural ancestry. Formerly a weigh house, the building in the town port had a transitive, measuring, evaluating function. It was a threshold space, made for the passage of goods, for their transition via a temporary halt, display and estimation.
As if subjected to a similar transition, Vasiljeva 's artworks are passersby in this liminal space.

MY PERVERSION IS THE BELIEF IN ART
23.10.2020 - 21.02.2021
ARTISTS: ELLEN CANTOR, MIRIAM CAHN, LUCIANO CASTELLI, ALBA S. ENSTRÖM, RAINER FETTING, ANDREA ÉVA GYőRI, VILJAMI HEINONEN, EEVA PEURA, MERZEDES STURM-LIE, MARIANNA UUTINEN, AMALIA VEKRI, ALISA YOFFE

The exhibition title is a reference to a quote from the late artist Ellen Cantor (1961–2013): ”My perversion is the belief in true love”.
This exhibition brings together artists from different generations and backgrounds. Artists who are interested not in the latest theories but in underground culture, poets, punk, life, passion, fashion magazines such as Vogue, popular film references, pornographic magazines... All featured artists address the struggle of being human, of finding an orientation in the here and now. They all bring energy into their art, with few or no compromises. Their determination to embrace both life and art can be seen as a harbinger of a better future.

23.10.2020 - 21.02.2021

In the 1960s Carl-Gustaf Lilius began creating a series of sculptures entitled Woman with Bird's Wings, which eventually came to comprise more than a dozen works. The 1966 bronze sculpture acquired for the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation collection is one of the first in the series. In the exhibition, Lilius's bronze is accompanied by a new soundscape by Lau Nau and Antti Tolvi that interrogates the sculpture about freedom and wildness.

ART REACHES OUT!
23.10.2020 - 30.05.2021

Each year, our collection unit installs dozens of artworks on city premises, within public spaces and in offices. The approximately one thousand such works include paintings, prints and sculptures, and everything from traditional portraits to non-figurative contemporary art.

How can art contribute to a work environment? What ideas, feelings or discussions have artworks in the city's premises inspired? Can art provide inspiration or serve as a tool in a workaday setting? The exhibition features pictures of school children and city personnel from Pori, each with a work from our collection that they have chosen for their workplace or school.
