KAREL MALICH & FEDERICO DÍAZ
06.02.2015 - 24.05.2015

Curated by Petr Rehor & Esko Nummelin

Karel Malich has worked since the end of 1950´s, dealing with the landscape and the cosmos. Drawings, sketched by only few lines, abstract material collages and complex filigree sculptures of wire demonstrate his constant examination of existential phenomena. Malich has functioned as Federico Díaz´s teacher and mentor. Since the 1990´s, Díaz has used new media to reveal immaterial aspects of everyday reality of our natural environment, which are elusive through primary human sences. Díaz´s work is typified by the language of algorithmically-generated art and systems art, which states that art is created without the touch of the
human hand. In collaboration with: Galerie Zdenĕk Sklenář

OKIN COLLECTIVE: OPERATION-FOR SOMETHING BLACK AND HOT (2012)
07.04.2015 - 24.05.2015
EAST ASIAN VIDEO FRAMES: SEOUL

The third location: Seoul. The three-year video project which started in January 2013 has reached the final destination of its journey to explore contemporary art scenes in East Asia. Korean contemporary art often remains in the shadows of its neighboring countries, Japan and China although it has developed its own specific artistic language. The aim of five art works and documentaries to be screened in 2015 is to introduce leading Korean artists and their thought-provoking recent art works.

Okin Collective is a group of artists, named after Okin-Dong site in Jongno-Gu, which was subject to redevelopment and gradual demolition and, consequently, inspired artists’ first group project in 2009. Since its inauguration, Okin Collective has actively explored the ever-changing urban space through artistic interventions and socially engaged art at the interface between everyday life and art. The main issues that Okin Collective investigates range from the individual survival to the impact of global capitalism across the borders. In 2010, the Collective also engaged with a form of ‘guerrilla broadcasting’, the Okin Internet Radio [STUDIO+82] (http://okin.cc/radio/index.html) was launched to make the voices of their related communities to be heard.

12.06.2015 - 17.01.2016
DANIEL & GEO FUCHS

The photographic series “FORCES” by the artist duo Daniel and Geo Fuchs interrogates the phenomenon of military and armed forces. One part of the series consists of photographs of fighters and combat aircrafts in unlikely or improbable situations and locations, impenetrable forests, deserts or impossibly parked in urban environments.
The other part of the series comprises staged scenes that feature soldiers, army helicopters in intriguing landscapes, grenades and bombs positioned like colorful sweets. The pictures present an appealing surface at first glance, but on closer look there is something disturbing and threatening about them. The pictures of explosions have a striking presence, they exude strength and energy released through a transformation of material.

TINY MOMENTS AND NUTTY BUSTLING – THE BOOK PAINTED BY BABIES
12.06.2015 - 13.09.2015

The Experiential Colour Workshop for Babies, weekly groups in spring 2015
Mentors: Annina Cerón, Terhi Sammalmaa, Jenni Uusitalo

Does the eastern rug of a little bum sweeper take wings? What does the cape of the Little Red Riding Hood or the fur of the big bad wolf feel like? Does Pessi’s and Illusia’s rainbow enchant with its colours? Will Alice find a way to the new world from a rabbit hole?
Old, classic fairy tales were the inspiration of the Experiential Colour Workshops for Babies in the spring 2015. Elements, colours, shapes, feels and scents known from the stories were used in the workshops through painting and experiencing. Each group of babies painted the weekly changing fairy tale to the big, soft book made of felt. That created a story of its own!

IM HEUNG-SOON

Curator: Minna Valjakka
Im Heung-soon: Memento (2003)
Our last stop of the journey: Seoul. The three-year video project which started in January 2013 has travelled through Hong Kong and Tokyo to the capital of South Korea. As in many cities in East Asia, rapid urbanization and globalization have irreversibly reshaped the urban landscape and social patterns. As the result, the notions of alienation, dislocation and inequality are widely shared among citizens and artists alike. Social change and its repercussions have continued to be one of the current themes in contemporary art in Seoul and these questions are also addressed in the five art works and documentaries to be screened in 2015.

"The Structure of Sleep" (2014) depicts the senselessness of everyday life and its alienated fragility, a kind of beauty. The world in the work takes place in a single building where a group of people moves as if in a choreography. The work explores human homelessness, our interpretations of the world and attempts at survival, using as its medium assemblages, magic, laconism, melancholia and humour, while viewing them all with a self-critical, yet amused gaze.
